Rema Early Life And Education
Divine Ikubor, born on 1 May 2000, professionally known as Rema was born and raised in Benin City, Edo State. He was born into a Christian family. He had his primary and secondary school in Benin City, Edo State and it was there he learned the rudiments of music. He started his music journey in Benin city since he was 11, starting as a rapper in a church “Christ of Mercy Church” where he was made the leader of a group called “Rap Nation” but later left the group to focus on the kind of music that would fit the popular sound in his community. It was somehow a hard time for Rema while growing up, he lost his father “Justice Ikubor” who was a former chieftain of the popular Nigerian political party “Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)” before his death in 2008. According to information gathered by Naijadisco Team, Mr. Justice Ikubor allegedly died in a hotel room in the capital city of the state but the cause of his death remains unknown as of the time of making this post. Seven years later, he lost his brother who bled to death due to unprofessional surgery that was carried out in a hospital with poor management. The death of his dad and brother placed financial hardship on Rema, his mother, and the rest of his siblings. Being the only man in the house, he had to do something, this made him engage in different kinds of jobs to solve their financial hardship. He also traveled to Ghana for greener pastures.
Rema Musical Career
Rema started his music journey as a rapper in a church group but eventually changing his sound to the kind of sound the majority of people in the community could vibe to. This is simply because, according to him, if he would make it to Lagos, he has to sound commercial. Before his fame and glory, Rema was a good rapper alongside his childhood friend and bandmate, Alpha P, and they both found the music group called “RNA”. They won a talent hunt competition called “Dream Alive with Pikolo Season 2” a show that was proudly sponsored by comedian-turned politician “Eromosele Daniel” (Pikolo).

In 2018, Nigeria’s Pop’s golden child “Rema” posted a viral freestyle to D’Prince’s hit single “Gucci Gang” a song that features both Don Jazzy and Davido, the post got D’Prince’s attention and reach out to Rema and his family in Benin City. The next day, D’Prince invited Rema to Lagos and signed a record deal with D’Prince’s Jozing World and Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records. He rose to stardom after his 2019 hit single “Iron Man” appeared on the former US President “Barack Obama” summer playlist. The former US President shared a list of 44 songs he and his wife were listening to during the summer and Rema was debuted at 42.
Rema was discovered by Prince, he wrote several songs for the label before D’Prince introduced him to his brother, Don Jazzy. On 22 March 2019, Rema was officially announced by Mavin Records as its new signee. Later in 2019, Rema released his first studio album that was self-named as ‘Rema’ under Jozing World and Mavin Records and the album peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria. The album was a 4 track album and features hit tracks like “Why”, “Dumebi”, ” lron Man”, and Corny with production from Ozedikus. Rema’s 2019 hit single, Dumebi a track that was produced by Ozedikus topped various music platforms. In June 2019, he made history as the first Nigerian artist to debut five top songs on Apple Music.
