Tems Early Life and Education

Tems was born in Lagos Nigeria on June 11, 1995, by a British-Nigerian father and a Zambian mother. Shortly after her birth, Tems and her family moved to England for three years. But her parents got divorced when she was barely five years old. After her parents got separated, Tems moved back with her mother to Lagos, Nigeria. They first stayed at Ilupeju, where she had her early education, then to Lekki Phase 1 where she attended Dowen College before they finally moved to Ajah, Lagos state. Tems has an older brother and they both were raised by her mother. She grew up a quiet damsel and infrequently talk to people in school. As a result, she didn’t have a lot of friends in high school so she had time to visit her music room.

Tems never had the intention of going to the university because she felt it will ruin her music dream. She tried her best to elude going to the university but her mom didn’t succumb to that. Her mother later succeeded in enrolling her into a school in South Africa and Tems left Nigeria for South Africa where she had a degree in Economics.

She started her music career at a tender age. At the age of 11, Tems developed a passion for music after she saw Beyoncé on TV while watching Pepsi Countdown. She always loves music but she thought her voice would restrict her because she felt she sound more like a man. She met her music teacher who helped her trained her voice and also encouraged her to keep the fire burning. After her education in South Africa, she moved back to Nigeria to focus on her music. In 2018, when she was about 23 years, she decided to get a job so she could raise money to finance her music. She was employed as a digital marketer in a company but quit the job after working for a while because that wasn’t what she want to vibe to.

Tems officially began her career in 2018. She released her first single “Mr. Rebel” in 2018 and backed it up with her hit single “Try Me” in August 2019. Try Me was a massive hit, earned her massive airplay and the music video has garnered over 7.6 million views on YouTube. Tems has gained huge success in her career and is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated young artists in the Nigerian music industry.

In 2020, Tems released her debut extended play (EP) dubbed “For The Broken Ears” and she was also recruited alongside the famous Nigerian singer Davido by the American singer, Khalid on “Know Your Worth” Remix in that same year. On 29 October 2020, Tems was featured by the Nigerian sensational singer, Wizkid on a hit song “Essence“. This collaboration earned her first career entry on Billboard Hot 100 and also earned her number one spot on BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart.
